"Pioneras Ilustradas" seeks to give visibility to the first female university students who managed to carve out a niche for themselves in the complex higher education system of the first decades of the 20th century in Spain (specifically in Aragonese territory) bypassing the difficulties, hostility, and complexity of the society of the time toward female emancipation.
Rosa Franco Rivas
In my case, I had to illustrate Rosa Franco Rivas. A pioneer in the field of technical engineering, she managed to break barriers and enter a discipline that for many decades was dominated by men. She was one of the first women to study a technical degree in Spain and had a long professional career as a Chemical Industrial Expert.
Choosing intentional compositions
The illustrations refer to the magazines of the time, which offered a single model of woman to follow: the one who stayed at home sewing and knitting, and whose behavior was intended for the male gaze.
